Today we are going to speak about the second part of the Summary Statement – the “Engineering Application Ability”. This section of the Summary Statement is the core part of it and should be well covered to pass the assessment with the EA. This part is intended to demonstrate your capabilities as an Engineer and this especially applies to the Professional Engineers.

This part of the Summary Statement includes four elements:

2.1 Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving.

2.2 Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.

2.3 Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes.

2.4 Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects.

In this part of the Summary Statement you can and you should go into the details about your engineering work, especially focusing on providing enough details about engineering design activities (that would be most relevant for the PE2.3).

Before you approach to filling in this part of the Summary Statement read the indicators description for the entire second part of the SS first  and then for each element separately. This will give you the understanding about how they differ one from another.

The first element concentrates on problematic situation sand on solutions you have found. The second element is all about application of tools (such as software tools) and techniques.  The third element is about the design experience – here you should list all the design experience you have described in your Career Episodes. The forth and the last element is about overall project management.

When you fill in your Summary Statement, try and write as many indicators as possible to cover as many competencies as possible from the EA booklet. We would recommend a very minimum of three indicators for each element in this part of the SS.

In the next article we are going to talk about the third part of the SS – the Professional and Personal Attributes.
