Chartered (Stage 2) requirements in 2026
Chartered status (CPEng, CEngT or CEngA) is how Engineers Australia recognises the Stage 2 competency for independent practice. Updated October 2026
- 5 to 15 years of experience: online self-assessment, written evidence for each competency element, up to three industry reviewers, enrolment with photo ID, a detailed CV and CPD records, then a video interview of about one hour.
- Written evidence: for each element, a brief statement explaining how your evidence demonstrates that competency.
- Interview: you discuss your recent work and share real work documents such as drawings, photos and reports. Slide presentations are not allowed.
- 15 years or more: you can apply for Chartered via interview, with a pre-approved CV, two referees, a reflection form and your CPD.
- Competency standard: 16 elements in four areas: personal commitment, obligation to community, value in the workplace and technical proficiency.
- Fee: AU$2,170 including GST. Each additional area of practice is AU$410.
- CPD: 150 hours every 3 years, with at least 50 hours in your area of practice, 10 hours of risk management and 15 hours of business and management.
- Coming change: the National Competency Standard for Engineering 2026 replaces Stage 2 with "Independent Practice" (17 competency statements), expected from around mid-2027.

What are the Engineers Australia Stage 2 competency standards?
The Stage 2 (Chartered) standard has 16 elements of competency in four areas: personal commitment, obligation to community, value in the workplace and technical proficiency. You need evidence for every element.
What is a Stage 2 narrative?
It is the written evidence for one competency element: a statement explaining what you did on real projects and how that demonstrates the element at Chartered level.
How many CPD hours do I need for Chartered?
150 hours over 3 years, including at least 50 hours in your area of practice, 10 hours of risk management and 15 hours of business and management.
Can I use my CDR for Chartered?
Your CDR is a useful starting point, but Chartered evidence must come from recent work at independent practice level. We use your CDR and CV to plan the 16 narratives.
How much does Stage 2 writing cost?
All 16 narratives are AU$495. A single narrative is AU$49. Stage 2 CPD preparation is AU$95.
