KA02 knowledge assessment with Engineering New Zealand (formerly IPENZ)

KA02 writing from scratch

We prepare KA02 knowledge assessments for engineers applying to Engineering New Zealand, for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) registration and for New Zealand immigration. General information on this type of application can be found in this article.

If you don’t have your self-review statements written, we can prepare your application from scratch. We would only need your CV, transcripts, course descriptors, any work samples, and answers to a few questions related to your professional engineering experience. Our assistance would include:

Preparation of your 8 self-review statements, evidence statements for your work samples, your CV and your CPD record, based on your professional experience. If you don’t have enough experience for your work samples, ask us about our research services.

KA02 requirements in 2026

Engineering New Zealand lists every requirement in its Knowledge Assessment Guidance. These are the parts we prepare for you. Updated October 2026

  • 8 self-review statements: one for each knowledge Element, about 500 words each, written in the first person, naming the courses you studied and pointing to the exact files and pages of your evidence.
  • Work sample evidence statements: showing how each work sample demonstrates the Elements. Engineering New Zealand accepts up to 4 work samples (up to 3 files each). Silver covers 2 work samples and Gold and Platinum up to 3; further work samples are available at an additional cost. The work samples are your own reports, drawings or calculations, and your referee signs a declaration.
  • CV: no more than three pages, showing your work history since graduation and how each role demonstrates the 8 Elements.
  • CPD record: optional but recommended by Engineering New Zealand, and useful evidence for Element 8 (research-based knowledge).

The 8 knowledge Elements: what to show

Engineering New Zealand asks for one self-review statement per Element. Each statement names the courses you studied and points to the file and pages where the assessor can see the evidence. A description of your work on its own is not accepted as evidence. The example lines below show the format.

1. Natural sciences

Calculus-based physics, chemistry and the other sciences your discipline relies on, and the scientific method.

ExampleIn my paper Engineering Physics II (transcript, page 2) I applied energy methods; in work sample 1, file 2, pages 4 to 6, I used heat transfer principles to size a cooling system.

2. Mathematics

Calculus, statistics, numerical methods and programming used to build and test models. Engineering New Zealand says this is the hardest Element to bridge with on-the-job experience alone.

ExampleIn work sample 2, file 1, pages 8 to 11, I used regression analysis on 12 months of flow data to calibrate the hydraulic model.

3. Engineering fundamentals

Depth and breadth in the core theory of engineering, applied to complex problems.

ExampleMy papers Mechanics of Materials and Fluid Mechanics (transcript, page 1) gave me the theory I applied in work sample 1, file 3, pages 2 to 5, to check beam deflections.

4. Specialist engineering

A coherent body of knowledge in your own field, at the level of current practice.

ExampleIn work sample 3, file 1, pages 12 to 18, I designed the reinforced concrete retaining wall to NZS 3101, using my postgraduate Structural Design papers.

5. Design process

A significant design you carried out yourself: investigation, options, and constraints such as safety, cost, environment and social impact.

ExampleIn work sample 1, file 1, pages 3 to 9, I compared three pump station layouts on cost, safety and maintenance and selected option B.

6. Engineering practice

Tools and modelling and their limits, materials, laboratory and safety procedures, communication, project management and teamwork.

ExampleIn work sample 2, file 3, pages 1 to 4, I tracked the project budget and programme in MS Project and reported weekly to the client.

7. Engineering in society

Ethics, health and safety, sustainability, risk management and quality systems.

ExampleIn work sample 4, file 2, pages 5 to 7, I prepared the construction risk register and the controls for working next to live traffic.

8. Research-based knowledge

Engagement with current research and new developments in your field, and ongoing professional development.

ExampleMy CPD record lists a 2025 seminar on low-carbon concrete, which I applied when specifying the mix in work sample 3, file 2, page 6.

KA02 questions

What is the KA02?

KA02 is the knowledge assessment of Engineering New Zealand (formerly IPENZ). It shows that an engineer without a Washington Accord degree has equivalent engineering knowledge. It is the first step towards Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) registration and is often needed for New Zealand immigration.

What do I need to submit for the knowledge assessment?

Academic transcripts, course descriptors, photo ID, a CV of up to three pages and a self-review statement for each of the 8 knowledge Elements. Work samples with a referee declaration, and CPD records, are optional but make your application stronger.

How long should each self-review statement be?

Engineering New Zealand suggests no more than about 500 words per Element. Each statement should be in the first person and refer to your courses and to the exact pages of your evidence.

Do I need a KA02 if my degree is Washington Accord accredited?

Usually not. Washington Accord degrees already meet the benchmark, and for Green List roles Immigration New Zealand does not ask for an NZQA qualification assessment. A credential check with Engineering New Zealand is normally enough.

How much does KA02 writing cost?

Silver is AU$395: 8 self-review statements, evidence statements for up to 2 work samples and your CPD record, within 4 weeks. Gold is AU$595: adds evidence statements for up to 3 work samples, your CV and unlimited edits, within 2 weeks. Platinum is AU$745: everything in Gold within 1 week, with two technical writers on your case. With Silver, a 3rd and 4th work sample are available at an additional cost; with Gold and Platinum, a 4th.

How long does Engineering New Zealand take?

About 50 working days for a standard assessment, or about 25 working days on the fast track, which is only for immigration applicants.

Can you help with CPEng after the KA02?

Yes. Contact us with your CV and we will tell you what your CPEng application needs.

Plagiarism

Quite often we are asked about plagiarism and how we avoid plagiarism in our work. Here is the answer:

We use a sophisticated software in all our work that compares your report to all previously written reports and to internet sources. We really care about plagiarism as we know that this is a major issue when submitting the application to Engineering New Zealand and other similar organisations.

Using our services guarantees that the application you receive from us is ready to submit and would be absolutely 100% plagiarism free.
