A CDR review is an independent check of your Competency Demonstration Report before you send it to Engineers Australia. First, it looks at your three career episodes, your summary statement and your CPD list. Above all, it answers one question: will the assessor find clear evidence of every competency element?
Engineers Australia expects your application to be “assessment ready” when you submit it. If the assessor finds gaps, you get one chance of 30 days to fix them. So a careful CDR review before you pay the assessment fee can save you time, money and stress.
In this guide, we explain what a CDR review covers and which problems it usually finds. We also show you how to get your draft checked at no cost through our free CDR evaluation.
What is a CDR review?
A CDR review is a structured check of a CDR that you have already written. The reviewer reads your documents the way an assessor would. Then they tell you what works, what is missing and what puts your application at risk.
However, a good review does not rewrite your report for you. Engineers Australia states that having your career episodes or summary statement written by another person counts as plagiarism. Instead, a review gives you clear feedback, so the final text stays in your own words and describes your own work.
A CDR review is also different from proofreading. For instance, proofreading fixes grammar and spelling. In contrast, a review checks evidence: does each paragraph show what you did, how you did it and which competency element it proves?
Why a CDR review matters before you submit
A weak CDR is expensive. In 2026-27, the Engineers Australia CDR assessment costs AU$1,034 including GST, and fast track adds AU$396. Our guide to Engineers Australia assessment fees lists all current fees.
In addition, the rules are strict. According to the Engineers Australia booklet Prepare your migration skills assessment application:
- your application should be assessment ready when you submit it;
- if gaps are found, you have one opportunity of 30 days to address them;
- incomplete or misleading information leads to an unsuccessful outcome and sanctions;
- plagiarism leads to immediate rejection and a 12, 24 or 36-month ban, and your details may be reported to the Department of Home Affairs.
A CDR review finds these problems while you can still fix them. In other words, it is much cheaper than a negative outcome.
What a CDR review checks
A thorough CDR review follows the same requirements an assessor uses. These are the main points we check.
- Structure and length. You need three career episodes in essay format, written in English and in the first person. Engineers Australia says each one should be between 1,000 and 2,500 words.
- Competency coverage. Your three career episodes must show all 16 elements of competency at least once.
- Summary statement mapping. Each competency element should point to a specific, numbered paragraph in your career episodes. Our guide on how to map your summary statement explains this step by step.
- Your personal role. The assessor wants to know what you did, not what the team did. Therefore, for group projects, you must explain your personal contribution. For university projects, add your supervisor’s name and email and the subject name and code.
- Occupation fit. Your episodes should match the occupation and occupational category you nominate, for example Professional Engineer or Engineering Technologist.
- Experience dates. Engineers Australia does not accept work experience claimed before you completed your qualification.
- Originality. The text must be your own work, in your own words. Read more in Can Engineers Australia detect an AI-written CDR?
- CPD statement. You need a written statement that lists your continuing professional development.
Common problems a CDR review finds
We have reviewed CDRs since 2009. In our experience, the same problems appear again and again:
- The project instead of the engineer. Long descriptions of the project, but very little about your own decisions.
- “We” instead of “I”. The assessor cannot credit work that sounds like a team effort.
- Claims without evidence. The summary statement claims an element, but the linked paragraph does not show it.
- Theory without application. Textbook explanations, but no calculations, design choices or results.
- The wrong level. Episodes that read like technologist work for a Professional Engineer application, or the other way round.
- Word counts out of range. Episodes that are far too short or far too long.
- Copied text. Paragraphs taken from manuals, company reports or websites.

Get a free CDR review with our free CDR evaluation
If you already have a draft, you can have it checked at no cost. Our free CDR evaluation is a first CDR review by our Engineers Australia specialists. You send your draft career episodes and summary statement, and we send you a detailed evaluation report within 48 hours.
How the free CDR evaluation works
- Upload your draft. Go to the free CDR evaluation page. Enter your name, email and engineering discipline, then upload your career episodes and summary statement (PDF or Word, up to 15 MB per file).
- A specialist reads it. A reviewer who knows your engineering field checks your draft against Engineers Australia requirements.
- You receive your report. Within 48 hours, we email you a detailed evaluation report.
- You decide what to do next. You can fix the gaps yourself, or ask us for more help. There is no obligation.
What your evaluation report covers
Your report focuses on the points that decide an assessment. For example, it can show you:
- whether your career episodes and summary statement meet Engineers Australia requirements;
- which competency elements are missing or weakly supported;
- where the structure, length or first-person writing needs work;
- which parts of your draft are already strong, so you do not change them;
- what to fix first, in order of importance.
What it costs
Nothing. In fact, the free CDR evaluation has no cost and no commitment. We offer it because many engineers want an honest second opinion before they pay AU$1,034 to Engineers Australia.
Who should use it
- Engineers who wrote their own CDR and want a check before they submit.
- Engineers who are not sure which occupation or category their experience fits.
- Engineers who received a request for more information, or a negative outcome. Our page on rejected CDRs explains your options.
How to get the most from your free evaluation
- Send all three career episodes and your summary statement, even if they are not finished.
- Use the notes field to tell us your nominated occupation and any concerns you have.
- Check that your files open correctly before you upload them.
What happens after your evaluation
Afterwards, many engineers use the report to fix the gaps themselves. However, if you want a deeper review, you can order our full check of your completed CDR. It includes a structural, style and linguistic analysis of each episode, an examination of your summary statement and a written Advice Report. It normally takes 5 to 7 days. See all our CDR services.

Quick CDR review checklist

Finally, before you submit, ask yourself these questions:
- Do I have three career episodes of 1,000 to 2,500 words each?
- Is every paragraph numbered?
- Does my summary statement link all 16 elements to specific paragraphs?
- Do I write “I” and describe my own decisions?
- Does my experience match the occupation I nominate?
- Is every sentence my own work?
- Have I included my CPD statement?
If you answer “no” or “not sure” to any of these, a CDR review is worth it. You can send your draft for a free evaluation today.
CDR review FAQs
How long does a CDR review take?
Our free CDR evaluation takes up to 48 hours. A full check of a completed CDR normally takes 5 to 7 days.
Can a CDR review guarantee a positive outcome?
No. After all, only Engineers Australia decides the outcome. However, a review shows you the gaps an assessor is likely to see, so you can fix them before you submit.
Should I get a review if Engineers Australia asked for more information?
Yes. You usually have one opportunity of 30 days to address gaps, so your response needs to be right the first time.
Do I need a CDR at all?
Not always, because it depends on where and how your degree is accredited. Read Do I need a CDR? to check your pathway.
