However, focusing entirely on AI detection can lead applicants in the wrong direction.
The more important issue is whether the CDR genuinely represents your own engineering experience and competency and complies with Engineers Australia’s ethical requirements.
Does Engineers Australia Say It Uses an AI Detector?
Applicants should distinguish between online speculation and published requirements.
Engineers Australia’s publicly available Migration Skills Assessment guidance sets out ethical standards concerning plagiarism, fake documents, and misleading information.
Applicants should not interpret the absence or presence of a particular public statement about an AI-detection tool as permission to submit externally generated or fabricated engineering evidence.
The central questions remain:
- Is the work genuinely yours?
- Are the engineering activities accurate?
- Did you personally perform what the Career Episode claims?
- Can you substantiate the technical evidence?
- Does your Summary Statement accurately map to your Career Episodes?
These questions matter regardless of whether an AI detector is involved.
AI Detection and Plagiarism Detection Are Not the Same Thing

A plagiarism checker generally looks for textual similarity between submitted material and existing sources.
An AI detector attempts to estimate whether text may have been produced by a language model.
Neither question alone establishes whether the engineering experience is genuine.
A paragraph could be entirely human-written and still describe work the applicant never performed.
Likewise, an AI-assisted paragraph might describe genuine information supplied by the applicant but still raise important authorship and compliance considerations.

The Wrong Question: “How Do I Make My CDR Pass AI Detection?”
Suppose you generated three Career Episodes using ChatGPT.
You then use another tool to “humanise” them.
The AI-detection score falls from 90% to 5%.
What has actually changed?
The engineering activities have not changed.
The calculations have not changed.
The project history has not changed.
If AI invented a design decision you never made, that claim remains inaccurate.
If it invented a calculation, the calculation remains problematic.
If the Career Episode does not represent your own authorship, changing the writing style does not resolve the underlying issue.
The goal should therefore not be to defeat AI detection.
The goal should be to make sure your CDR is authentic, accurate, and evidence-based.
What Engineers Australia Actually Assesses
Career Episodes play a central role in demonstrating competency.
Engineers Australia’s guidance asks applicants to describe projects or pieces of engineering work, explain their role, identify problems they solved and demonstrate how they applied engineering knowledge and skills.
Applicants should also provide sufficient engineering evidence. Depending on the project, this may include:
- calculations;
- diagrams;
- photographs;
- tables;
- engineering standards;
- software outputs.
This is why generic AI writing is often strategically weak even before ethical questions are considered.
An assessor needs evidence of your engineering thinking.
AI Cannot Know Your Project Unless You Tell It
Generative AI works by producing plausible responses based on the information and patterns available to it.
It was not standing beside you when the pump failed.
It did not attend your design review.
It did not perform your load calculation.
It does not know why you rejected Option A and selected Option B.
It does not know which error you discovered during commissioning.
Those details need to come from you.
And those are often precisely the details that make a Career Episode persuasive.
Five Things That Matter More Than an AI Score

Does the episode clearly show what you did?
2. Technical accuracy
Are calculations, values, standards and engineering principles correct?
3. Authenticity
Did the events and engineering activities actually happen as described?
4. Competency evidence
Does the Career Episode genuinely demonstrate the competency elements claimed in the Summary Statement?
5. Consistency
Does the narrative agree with your CV, academic or employment evidence and other supporting information?
These five areas deserve far more attention than an arbitrary AI-detection percentage.
What If ChatGPT Invented Details?
Treat every invented technical detail as a potential problem.
Go through your Career Episodes line by line.
Highlight every statement concerning:
- calculations;
- numerical results;
- standards;
- software;
- equipment;
- specifications;
- engineering decisions;
- project challenges;
- solutions;
- responsibilities;
- outcomes.
Ask:
Can I personally verify this?
If not, return to the genuine project records.
Never retain invented information simply because it makes the project sound technically impressive.
What If My Own Writing Is Flagged as AI?
Automated AI-detection tools can produce uncertain results, which is another reason not to build your CDR strategy around a score from a third-party detector.
Your priority should remain the underlying evidence and compliance with Engineers Australia’s current requirements.
Keep project records where available.
Use genuine calculations.
Use your actual engineering decisions.
Describe your personal contribution.
Make sure you understand and can substantiate everything contained in the application.
Do Not Confuse “Human-Sounding” With Authentic
Consider this sentence:
“I meticulously evaluated several sophisticated alternatives before strategically implementing the optimal engineering solution.”
It sounds polished.
But it tells the assessor almost nothing.
Compare it with:
“I compared the pressure losses for the two proposed pipe diameters. The smaller pipe produced a pressure drop above the project’s allowable value, so I selected the larger diameter before updating the pump duty requirement.”
The second paragraph is stronger because it provides a traceable engineering decision.
Authenticity is often found in specificity, not sophisticated vocabulary.
Check the Summary Statement Too
Even if the Career Episodes are genuine, AI-generated competency mapping can create problems.
Your Summary Statement should point the assessor to the exact paragraphs where competencies are demonstrated.
Do not accept an AI-generated mapping without checking it.
If paragraph CE2.8 discusses procurement but AI maps it to a technical design competency, correct the mapping.

Trying to make AI-generated text “undetectable” addresses the wrong problem.

Is every engineering claim in this CDR genuinely mine, accurate and supportable?
If you can confidently answer yes, you are focusing on the issue that actually matters.
