Mechanical Engineer CDR Example: Mid Level
Mechanical Engineer · 3+ years experience
About this CDR
Three Career Episodes from an engineer at a large air conditioning manufacturer: cooling a hot production factory, setting up a new HVAC duct manufacturing shop, and redesigning the warehouse with a radio shuttle racking system. Covers heat load calculation, machine and layout design and lean methods. This CDR was assessed and approved by Engineers Australia under the Professional Engineer (PE) competency standard.
How to use this CDR
Use this CDR as a guide to the structure, technical detail and writing style that Engineers Australia assessors accept, then write your own Career Episodes about your own projects, in your own words. This CDR was written entirely by a human writer, with no AI tools used at any stage.

Factory Cooling: Heat Load, Chillers and Air Handling Units
Led the cooling of a large production factory where summer temperatures reached 40 to 45 C. Measured temperatures at 20 points, calculated heat loads from people, machines and lighting, balanced exhaust and fresh air flows, and used Why Why analysis to replace many small air handling units with fewer large ones, saving 60% of the floor space. Installed 4 chillers and 12 AHUs to SMACNA standards.
New HVAC Duct Manufacturing Facility
Set up a new duct shop inside an existing building. Produced 7 layout revisions in AutoCAD, calculated bending force and spring-back, inspected machines at the supplier, and chose a pneumatic folder that needed one operator instead of three. Introduced mechanical clinching in place of drilling and riveting, and wrote SMACNA-based work instructions. Trial production beat the target of 100 square metres per shift.
Warehouse Layout and Radio Shuttle Racking System
Redesigned material flow in a busy warehouse and selected cantilever, pallet, mezzanine and radio shuttle racking. Used value stream mapping, 5S and Ishikawa analysis to stop copper coil damage, enforced first in first out storage, and designed a standard slave pallet to BS EN 13698-2 that kept the project on schedule. Estimated savings of about USD 133,000 a year with a payback of under a month.
Summary Statement
Maps all 16 Professional Engineer competency elements (PE1.1 to PE3.6) to the exact paragraphs in the three Career Episodes where it is demonstrated, so the assessor can check each element quickly.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
A list of the professional development completed since graduation, such as courses, training, conferences, seminars and self-study, set out in the format Engineers Australia asks for.
