Mechanical Engineer CDR Example: Junior
Mechanical Engineer · 1 year experience
About this CDR
Three Career Episodes from a mechanical engineer in the first year of work at a sheet metal fabrication company: a trolley disinfectant station for a supermarket chain, a custom press brake tool for a high-volume bracket order, and a riveted metal drawer with new turret punch tooling. Strong on design for manufacture. This CDR was assessed and approved by Engineers Australia under the Professional Engineer (PE) competency standard.
How to use this CDR
Use this CDR as a guide to the structure, technical detail and writing style that Engineers Australia assessors accept, then write your own Career Episodes about your own projects, in your own words. This CDR was written entirely by a human writer, with no AI tools used at any stage.

Trolley Disinfectant Station: Design to Commissioning
Designed and built a shopping trolley disinfectant station for a supermarket chain during the pandemic. Modelled the unit in Onshape, ran folding simulations for two brake press brands, calculated nozzle pressure and pump flow, and replaced a diaphragm pump with peristaltic pumps. Programmed the controller for remote usage reports and solved nozzle clogging with an automatic cleaning cycle.
Custom Press Brake Tool for a High-Volume Bracket Order
Developed a new press brake tool when no standard V die could fold the required bracket. Designed a Z bend tool and then an in-house three-fold tool from scrap steel, added it to the machine tool database and wrote an SOP for operators. Ran nesting simulations in Amada VPSS and used two laser programs to keep the machine running around the clock, fitting 5.6% more parts per sheet.
Riveted Metal Drawer with Burst Extrude and Tapping Tooling
Designed a thin riveted metal drawer for store cleaning supplies, with a sliding bracket that fixes to shelving feet. Replaced manual clinch nuts by specifying, installing and commissioning a burst extrude and tapping tool on the turret punch, then traced a broken tap to an undersized extrusion. The change removed a manual operation and improved material use.
Summary Statement
Maps all 16 Professional Engineer competency elements (PE1.1 to PE3.6) to the exact paragraphs in the three Career Episodes where it is demonstrated, so the assessor can check each element quickly.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
A list of the professional development completed since graduation, such as courses, training, conferences, seminars and self-study, set out in the format Engineers Australia asks for.
