Electronics Engineer CDR Example: Senior Level (Naval Electronics)
Electronics Engineer · Senior engineer
About this CDR
Three Career Episodes from a senior electronics engineer in a naval service: an FPGA-based CPU teaching tool from Masters studies, a microcontroller monitoring and control module for tugboat main engines, and a UHF communication network upgrade with central monitoring and automatic vessel location tracking. This CDR was assessed and approved by Engineers Australia under the Professional Engineer (PE) competency standard.
How to use this CDR
Use this CDR as a guide to the structure, technical detail and writing style that Engineers Australia assessors accept, then write your own Career Episodes about your own projects, in your own words. This CDR was written entirely by a human writer, with no AI tools used at any stage.

FPGA-Based CPU for Teaching Microprocessor Architecture
Masters project to build a CPU on a Xilinx Spartan FPGA in VHDL as a teaching tool. Implemented a UART link over RS-232 to a LabVIEW interface that shows register contents live while the CPU runs each instruction, and defended the project before the faculty.
Monitoring and Control Module for Tugboat Main Engines
Designed a replacement engine monitoring and control module for two tugboats taken out of service by control system faults. Built sensor conversion circuits and actuator drivers around a Microchip PIC microcontroller, simulated in Proteus, laid out PCBs in Altium, calibrated sensors without data sheets and briefed the crew on the new system.
UHF Communication Network Upgrade with Location Tracking
Led the upgrade of a naval UHF network as manager of the communication systems centre: eight new repeaters, networking of all 15 repeaters over the naval data network, central monitoring of mobile radios and an automatic location tracking system for vessels. Prepared specifications, evaluated the vendor solution and proved the system on a test network first.
Summary Statement
Maps all 16 Professional Engineer competency elements (PE1.1 to PE3.6) to the exact paragraphs in the three Career Episodes where it is demonstrated, so the assessor can check each element quickly.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
A list of the professional development completed since graduation, such as courses, training, conferences, seminars and self-study, set out in the format Engineers Australia asks for.
