Mechanical Engineer CDR Example: Senior Level
Mechanical Engineer · 6+ years experience
About this CDR
Three Career Episodes from an HVAC mechanical engineer: replacing an office building chiller plant with an energy-saving air-cooled system, MVAC design for a large apparel factory, and the kitchen ventilation and building management control sequence for a university hospital. This CDR was assessed and approved by Engineers Australia under the Professional Engineer (PE) competency standard.
How to use this CDR
Use this CDR as a guide to the structure, technical detail and writing style that Engineers Australia assessors accept, then write your own Career Episodes about your own projects, in your own words. This CDR was written entirely by a human writer, with no AI tools used at any stage.

Chiller Plant Replacement for an Office Building
Replaced the chiller plant of an occupied office building. Built a weighted HVAC selection matrix based on the ASHRAE handbook, chose an air-cooled chiller, and simulated part-load efficiency from 100% down to 10% across ambient temperatures with chiller selection software. Calculated a full year of running cost and ROI, negotiated supplier prices, and planned the rooftop lift with safety method statements.
MVAC System Design for an Apparel Factory
Designed a central air conditioning and ventilation system for a 5,475 square metre apparel factory as a university design project. Calculated a 1,016 kW peak cooling load in Carrier HAP, zoned the factory into 20 zones with AHUs and FCUs, sized pumps and ducts, and compared a single 300 TR chiller with a constant speed plus variable speed pair for efficiency and redundancy.
Hospital Kitchen Ventilation and BMS Control Sequence
Mechanical engineer on a fast-track university hospital project. Designed the sequence of operation for three kitchen hoods, supply and exhaust fans and VAVs to keep the kitchen at negative pressure, calculated air changes for four operating cases, and integrated everything into the BMS. Followed the ASHRAE hospital design manual, NFPA 90A and AMCA, and reduced motor sizes through value engineering.
Summary Statement
Maps all 16 Professional Engineer competency elements (PE1.1 to PE3.6) to the exact paragraphs in the three Career Episodes where it is demonstrated, so the assessor can check each element quickly.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
A list of the professional development completed since graduation, such as courses, training, conferences, seminars and self-study, set out in the format Engineers Australia asks for.
